Commercial Court 10 of Barcelona has rejected Barcelona’s attempt to re-register Dani Olmo for the second half of the season, casting doubt on the Spanish playmaker’s future at the club.
The decision, announced on Friday, leaves the Catalan giants scrambling to resolve financial constraints imposed by La Liga, which have prevented them from making the £50 million summer signing from RB Leipzig a permanent part of their squad.
Barcelona had initially registered Olmo on a temporary basis until the end of 2024, pending compliance with La Liga’s financial fair play guidelines. However, with the league pushing for further cost-cutting measures or additional revenue streams, the club now faces the risk of losing the 26-year-old for free when the January transfer window opens.
In a statement, Barcelona revealed plans to file a new lawsuit against La Liga, arguing that the registration rules are invalid due to the league’s alleged lack of competence. Olmo’s agent, Andy Bara, has reportedly started exploring alternative options for the midfielder, with top Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal, expressing interest.
According to reports, the uncertainty surrounding Olmo comes despite his intention to remain with Barcelona, where he has scored five goals in 11 La Liga appearances this season. Sources close to the player stated, “Dani’s priority has always been to stay at Barcelona. But the ongoing financial hurdles have made the situation untenable.”
Barcelona is in a race against time to raise funds. The club has proposed selling VIP seat packages worth an estimated £166 million (€200 million) in a desperate bid to alleviate financial pressure and secure the registrations of both Olmo and another player, Victor. Olmo was instrumental in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph, further cementing his status as one of Europe’s top attacking midfielders.
His agent, Andy Bara, who also represents Spain captain Álvaro Morata, is reportedly in Manchester to explore potential deals for the player should Barcelona fail to resolve the crisis.
This latest setback follows Barcelona’s reported ultimatums to Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araújo, whose contracts expire in 2026. While Araújo is said to be close to signing a new deal, De Jong’s future remains uncertain after he declined a contract extension earlier this year.
