Arsenal Goalie joins Southampton

Southampton have announced the signing of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal.

He joined on a four-year contract.

The move bolsters manager Russell Martin’s options just ahead of the summer transfer window’s closure.

Ramsdale, who has earned five caps for the England national team, arrives at St Mary’s following three seasons at Arsenal, where he made 89 appearances. He was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the 2022/23 season, recognized as the division’s standout goalkeeper. Prior to his time at Arsenal, Ramsdale established his reputation with Sheffield United and Bournemouth, accumulating a total of 153 Premier League appearances.

Expressing his excitement, Russell Martin said, “I’m delighted. Bringing in a player like Aaron is a real statement signing for us, so I’m very grateful to ownership and the board for making it happen, especially as so many other clubs were keen to get him.”

Martin praised Ramsdale’s footballing abilities and character, emphasizing the importance of his experience and leadership qualities both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

The signing adds further strength to Southampton’s goalkeeper group, which includes Alex McCarthy, Joe Lumley, and Gavin Bazunu, with McCarthy being pivotal in the team’s return to the Premier League. Ramsdale’s arrival comes as Gavin Bazunu recovers from injury, and with Mateusz Lis moving to Göztepe.
