Al Ahly of Egypt clinched a tense 1-0 victory over Esperance of Tunisia in Cairo on Saturday, securing their record-extending 12th CAF Champions League title.
The early own-goal by Roger Aholou proved to be the difference, as Ahly won 1-0 on aggregate following a goalless first leg of the final. This victory marked their fourth time winning back-to-back titles in the prestigious African club competition.
They also joined an elite group as the third team to win the Champions League with an unbeaten record, having won nine and drawn five of 14 qualifying, group, and knockout matches.
Ahly’s triumph completed a double for Cairo clubs, as their arch rivals Zamalek secured the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup title the previous weekend.
Both teams will face off in the next edition of the CAF Super Cup.
