World’s largest pilgrimage commences in India

India has recently opened the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest Hindu pilgrimages in the world, with an expected attendance of 400 million pilgrims.

The festival, held at the confluence of the holy Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj, is a significant religious and cultural event. Pilgrims from across the country and beyond gather to bathe in the sacred waters, seeking spiritual purification and blessings.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 has commenced in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and is set to run from January 13 to February 26, 2025. This grand event is expected to attract over 40 crore (400 million) devotees from around the world.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is rooted in Hindu mythology and is considered the most sacred gathering, occurring once every 144 years. Pilgrims believe that bathing in the sacred waters of the Triveni Sangam (confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers) will wash away their sins and help them attain spiritual liberation (Moksha).
