Uganda’s President Museveni Appoints Son as Military Head

Muhoozi Kainerugaba

Uganda’s long-standing President Yoweri Museveni has appointed his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba as head of the army, further confirming the suspicions of many that he is grooming his eldest child for the presidency once he decides to retire.

The appointment of Muhoozi Kainerugaba as Chief of Defence Forces was announced on Thursday Night by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.

Although the 49-year-old general has in the past denied claims he intends to succeed his father, this appointment is a testament to his rapid ascent through the Ugandan army ranks since the late 1990s.

Last year, in a now-deleted post on X, Kainerugaba said he plans to contest for the presidency in the 2026 elections, although he has reportedly also denied claims he is eyeing the top job.
