A man suspected of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump camped outside a Florida golf course for nearly 12 hours with food and a rifle before being spotted by a Secret Service agent who opened fire, according to court documents.

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, did not fire any shots and fled after the agent fired in his direction. He was later arrested in a neighboring county.

Routh appeared in federal court on firearms charges, marking the start of a criminal case just weeks before the presidential election.

This incident follows another attempt on Trump’s life in July, raising concerns about the security provided to him.

Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe Jr. defended his agency, citing the increasing challenges posed by the current “hyper-dynamic threat environment.”

Authorities are investigating Routh’s motives, as well as his online presence, which reveals evolving political views and disdain for Trump, whom he once supported.

Routh has a criminal record, including past felony convictions, and is accused of possessing a rifle with an unreadable serial number. He remains in custody as a flight risk.

The incident has sparked further scrutiny of the security surrounding Trump, especially during off-the-record events at his properties.

The Secret Service continues to adapt its protective measures in response to the growing threats.
