U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, discussing the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Trump advised Putin not to escalate the conflict and reminded him of the significant U.S. military presence in Europe. During his campaign, Trump claimed he could end the war “within a day,” though he did not specify how.
Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday.
On Friday, the Kremlin stated that while Putin was open to discussing Ukraine with Trump, he was not willing to change Russia’s demands. Putin’s terms for ending the war include Ukraine dropping its NATO ambitions and withdrawing its troops from all territories claimed by Russia.
Ukraine has rejected these terms, viewing them as a form of capitulation.
Instead, Zelenskiy has proposed a “victory plan” that seeks additional military support from the West.
