Telegram’s Chief Executive, Pavel Durov, is expected to appear in court on Sunday after being arrested by French police at Le Bourget airport near Paris.
The 39-year-old Franco-Russian billionaire was detained on Saturday evening after arriving from Baku, Azerbaijan.
Sources, who spoke anonymously, revealed that Durov is facing allegations related to fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime, and the promotion of terrorism, which stem from a preliminary investigation led by France’s Office for the Prevention of Violence Against Minors (OFMIN).
The charges revolve around accusations that Durov failed to curb the criminal activities occurring on Telegram.
A source close to the investigation commented, “Enough of Telegram’s impunity,” and expressed surprise at Durov’s decision to travel to Paris, despite knowing he was wanted by authorities.
