A marble tablet inscribed with the Ten Commandments has been sold for over $5 million at an auction in New York.
The tablet, dating from 300 to 800 AD, is inscribed in Paleo-Hebrew script and is the only complete example of its kind from antiquity. It was acquired by an anonymous buyer who plans to donate it to an Israeli institution.
The tablet was unearthed during railroad excavations along the southern coast of Israel in 1913 and was initially used as a paving stone until 1943, when a scholar recognized its historical significance.
The final price exceeded the presale estimate of $1 to $2 million and followed more than 10 minutes of intense bidding.
