Thailand’s parliament has voted for 37-year-old Paetongtarn Shinawatra to become the country’s youngest Prime Minister.
She is the daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, former Manchester City owner & former Prime Minister who was ousted in a 2006 coup and has remained a powerful figure in Thai politics.
Paetongtarn’s nomination by her Pheu Thai party comes after the recent removal of another prime minister by the Constitutional Court, further deepening the country’s political uncertainty.
Paetongtarn won 319 votes in the House of Representatives and, if endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, she will officially take office as Thailand’s second female prime minister, following her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra.
Despite being a political newcomer, Paetongtarn made headlines last year when she gave birth just two weeks before national elections.
She has vowed to do her best in this new role amidst the ongoing political challenges in Thailand.
