Seventeen killed in South Africa Mass Shooting

A mass shooting in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, South Africa, has left 17 people dead and one critically injured, according to police reports.

The attack took place on Friday night in Nyathi village, Ngobozana, targeting two homesteads on the same street.

In one homestead, 12 women and one man were killed, while three women and one man were shot dead in the second. The victims, mostly relatives and neighbors, had gathered to prepare for a traditional mourning ceremony when the attackers struck.

Eyewitnesses described the terror as gunshots rang out and doors were kicked open. Six people, including a two-month-old baby, survived the attack, but there were no survivors in the second homestead. A team of detectives and forensic experts has been dispatched to investigate, but no arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear.

The shooting underscores South Africa’s ongoing struggle with gun violence, as the country continues to face one of the highest murder rates in the world. Local authorities are working to bring the perpetrators to justice.
