In his New Year speech, Senegal’s President Bassirou Dioumaye Faye announced that 2025 will mark the end of all foreign military presence in the country.
This decision comes as part of his commitment to deliver sovereignty and reduce dependence on foreign nations.
President Faye, who took office in April, emphasized that Senegal is a sovereign country and that the presence of foreign military bases is incompatible with this sovereignty.
The announcement follows a previous statement in November, where President Faye indicated that former colonial power France would need to close its military bases in Senegal. He reiterated that this move does not signify a break with France, which remains an important partner for investment and cooperation.
President Faye has instructed the Minister for the Armed Forces to propose a new doctrine for cooperation in defense and security, which will involve the closure of all foreign military bases by the end of 2025.
This marks a significant step towards enhancing Senegal’s independence and self-reliance.
