Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy engaged in discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) in Saudi Arabia, aiming to facilitate an end to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and secure the release of prisoners of war.
According to a statement on Zelenskyy’s website, the talks revolved around a Ukrainian initiative to resolve the conflict, with Zelenskyy expressing gratitude for Bin Salman’s role in mediating the crisis. Zelenskyy emphasized Saudi Arabia’s potential to contribute to achieving a just resolution to the conflict.
While Saudi Arabia has maintained close ties with Russia, particularly in energy policies through the OPEC+ alliance, Mohammed has positioned himself as a mediator in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict.
The state-run Saudi Press Agency affirmed the kingdom’s support for international efforts to address the crisis, as MBS seeks to play a constructive role in resolving global conflicts.
Zelenskyy’s visit coincided with ongoing military setbacks for Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine, where Russian troops hold a significant advantage in numbers and weaponry.
The Ukrainian military reported withdrawals from two villages near Avdiivka in the Donetsk region following fierce overnight clashes. Despite facing challenges on the ground, Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s reliance on Saudi Arabia’s support in advancing a “Peace Formula” to end the invasion, which entered its second year over the weekend.
Discussions also encompassed the release of prisoners of war and deportees, areas where Saudi leadership has previously contributed, according to Zelenskyy.
Bin Salman’s diplomatic engagements extend beyond Ukraine, as evidenced by recent meetings with Russian officials and his involvement in global crises, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s evolving role in regional and international affairs despite past controversies.
