Russia strikes 40 dead in Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, President of Ukraine

At least 41 people have been confirmed dead, and over 180 injured after Russian cruise missiles struck Poltava, a central Ukrainian city, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The missiles targeted an educational institution and a nearby medical facility, with many victims still trapped under the rubble. This attack is among the deadliest since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over 900 days ago.

Ukraine’s defense ministry highlighted that the time between the bomb sirens and the missile strikes was too short for people to reach shelters, leaving them vulnerable to the attack.

In a related development, Mongolia failed to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin during his two-day visit, despite being a signatory to the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute.

The statute obligates Mongolia to detain Putin, who is under an international arrest warrant for alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

However, Mongolia’s economic dependence on Russia may have influenced its decision not to act on the warrant.
