Starting January 1, 2025, Russia has halted the transit of its natural gas through Ukraine.
This marks the end of a decades-long arrangement that began after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ukraine’s refusal to renew the gas transit deal amid the ongoing conflict with Russia led to this decision.
Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, described the move as a “historic event,” emphasizing that Russia will now lose significant markets and face financial losses. The European Union has been preparing for this scenario, aiming to reduce its reliance on Russian gas.
The cessation of gas transit is expected to have significant implications for several European countries, including Slovakia, Hungary, and Moldova, which have historically depended on this route for their gas supplies.
