Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at the age of 92.
He was admitted to the emergency department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi after experiencing breathing difficulties.
Despite all resuscitative measures, he could not be revived and was declared dead.
Manmohan Singh, often hailed as the architect of India’s economic reforms, served as the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. His tenure is remembered for transformative economic policies that laid the foundation for India’s liberalized economy. Singh was also known for his humility, diligence, and unwavering commitment to his work.
In response to his passing, the Government of India has declared a seven-day national mourning period. The Congress party has canceled all official programs, including the Foundation Day celebrations, as a mark of respect. The party flag will be flown at half-mast during this period of mourning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, and other prominent figures have expressed their condolences. Modi described Singh as “one of India’s most distinguished leaders” and praised his wisdom and humility.
Manmohan Singh’s last rites will be conducted with full state honors. His legacy as a statesman and a reformer will continue to inspire future generations.
