Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have announced their decision to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with the withdrawal set to take effect on January 29, 2025.
This decision was confirmed during the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja.
The ECOWAS Authority has granted a six-month transitional period, lasting until July 29, 2025, during which the three countries can reconsider their decision.
The Authority has also extended the mandates of the Presidents of Togo and Senegal to continue mediation efforts throughout this period.
