The Kenyan Senate has impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after a vote held on Thursday evening.
Despite a plea from Gachagua’s lawyer, Paul Muite, to delay the proceedings due to the deputy president’s hospitalization, the Senate proceeded with the vote.
Gachagua, who faced 11 charges, was impeached on five counts, including undermining the judiciary and gross misconduct.
His impeachment marks the first time a Kenyan deputy president has been removed from office. A total of 281 MPs voted in favor of his ouster.
