Kenya Dam burst kills 42

As heavy rains and floods continue to torment the East African country of Kenya, 42 people have lost their lives after a dam burst its banks.

“Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud, we are working on recovery,” said Nakuru governor Susan Kihika.

The dam reportedly washed away houses and cut off a road, leaving rescuers digging through debris to find survivors.

With Monday’s dam collapse and the El Nino weather trend causing heavier-than-normal rainfall across East Africa, the overall number of deaths during the March–May wet season now stands at 120.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross said Monday it had retrieved two bodies after a boat carrying “a large number of people” capsized at the weekend in flooded Tana River county in eastern Kenya, adding that 23 others had been rescued.

Earlier today, News VEO reported that Kenya’s Ministry of Education have postponed the reopening of schools by one week due to floods brought about by torrential rainfall.
