To tackle the issue of labor shortages, the Japanese government has decided to welcome 820,000 foreign workers into the transportation and logistics sector over the next five years to boost important industries.
Foreign skilled workers are to fill roles where interactions with passengers are very vital, and it include bus, taxi, truck drivers but a high level of Japanese language is required with both professional skills. This expansion marks the first since the program’s inception in 2019.
Apart from the transportation and logistics sectors, the “Specified Skilled Worker No. 1” visa program will cover 16 industries including the manufacturing of textiles, iron, steel and printing. While the No. 2 visa will allow potential permanent residency, unlimited renewals and will allow workers to bring in their families to Japan.
The new program aims to make it easier for trainees to move to the skilled worker program by allowing them allowing them change jobs within the same industries while acquiring the necessary skills in particular situations.
Yoshimasa Hayashi, the Chief Cabinet Secretary, pleaded with the ministries to be ready to welcome and accept these foreign workers without delay.
