Israelis go on strike, demands cease-fire deal with Hamas

Israelis

A nationwide strike gripped Israel on Monday, heightening pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate a cease-fire and prisoner exchange deal with Hamas.

The powerful labor union, Histadrut, spearheaded the strike after the bodies of six Israeli hostages were recovered from Gaza, sparking public outrage. Nearly 770,000 protesters took to the streets in cities like Tel Aviv.

In a significant move, Ben-Gurion International Airport halted flights for two hours, signaling the broad impact of the strike.

As frustration grows over the government’s handling of the hostage situation, the Israeli government has asked the Supreme Court to cancel the strike, though continued disruptions could affect travel throughout the week.

Israel believes that more than 100 hostages remain in Hamas captivity. Meanwhile, its military actions in Gaza have led to over 40,700 Palestinian deaths and have caused severe humanitarian crises in the region.
