President Biden expressed confidence on Friday that the upcoming election would be free and fair but voiced concern about potential violence if former President Donald Trump once again refuses to accept the results.
During an impromptu appearance at the White House daily briefing, Biden remarked, “I’m confident it will be free and fair. I don’t know whether it’ll be peaceful.” He referenced Trump’s previous refusal to accept the 2020 election outcome, calling his rhetoric “very dangerous.”
Biden also highlighted that Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, avoided answering whether they would accept the results of the 2024 election during a recent debate. Vance instead said they were focused on the future.
In response, Trump, speaking in Georgia, expressed hope that the election would be free and fair, stating, “All I want is a fair election. That’s all.” However, when asked if he trusted the process this year, he said, “I’ll let you know in 33 days,” hinting at uncertainty about the outcome.
Trump’s remarks came amid revelations from a court filing by special counsel Jack Smith, which outlined Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The 165-page document described Trump’s “increasingly desperate plans” to reverse election outcomes in seven states where he lost. Despite these legal battles, Trump continues to claim, without evidence, that he won the 2020 election.
