Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the oldest living president in U.S. history, passed away on Sunday at the age of 100.

He died at his home in Plains, Georgia, according to his son, James E. Carter III.

He was surrounded by his family.

Carter was known for his extensive humanitarian work and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts “to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
