Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) reiterated on Saturday that the blast at Iraq’s military base constituted an assault.
Late Friday, an explosion claimed the lives of two PMF officials and left eight others injured at Kalso military base in Babil Province, approximately 50km south of Baghdad.
In an announcement, the PMF disclosed that its chief of staff, Abdul Aziz al-Mohammedawi, had visited the site and “scrutinized the particulars of the investigative committees present at the site of the attack.”
The force commander affirmed it as an assault, while the army stated it was conducting an investigation, clarifying that there were no warplanes airborne during the explosion.
The Iraqi military disclosed that a technical committee was probing the origin of an explosion and subsequent fire at the base, noting that the incident occurred at 1 am on Saturday (2200 GMT Friday).
“The air defence command report confirmed, through technical efforts and radar detection, that there was no drone or fighter jet in the air space of Babil before and during the explosion,” the military said in a statement.
