President Bola Tinubu has affirmed that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will persist in its efforts to persuade Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to rejoin the bloc.
These countries severed ties with ECOWAS after facing sanctions due to military coups.
Tinubu, who also serves as ECOWAS Chairman, emphasized the importance of enhancing regional security and upholding constitutional governance.
Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with ECOWAS defense chiefs, he expressed determination to restore unity within the bloc.
Tinubu acknowledged the challenges of his tenure, noting the exit of three member states, but stressed the importance of extending a hand of friendship to encourage their return.
He also highlighted the need for collective action to address terrorism and other regional issues, emphasizing that the ECOWAS standby force must be prepared for any situation.
“We will continue to invest in both security and the economic prosperity of our region,” Tinubu stated.
