Sean Combs, also known as “Diddy,” is appealing a federal court ruling that denies him bail while awaiting trial.
In a notice filed on Monday, Combs’ legal team seeks to overturn U.S. District Judge Andrew Carter’s decision, which determined that Combs posed a safety risk to the community and witnesses in the case.
The ruling followed the unsealing of a three-count indictment, accusing Combs of crimes linked to an alleged decades-long pattern of physical and sexual violence. The charges include sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation for prostitution, with federal prosecutors alleging that Combs led a vast criminal enterprise since at least 2008.
Combs had requested release on a $50 million bond, backed by the equity in his Miami residence and that of his mother. He proposed conditions that included restricting visitors to family, caretakers, and non-co-conspirator friends, along with a pledge to avoid contacting grand jury witnesses. Additional measures in the bail package included weekly drug testing and maintaining a visitor log.
If convicted, the 54-year-old Combs faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and a possible life sentence.
He is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a facility known for harsh and unsafe conditions.
