A Canadian mining company, Lucara Diamond Corp., announced the discovery of a massive 2,492-carat diamond in Botswana on Thursday.
Unearthed at the Karowe Diamond Mine, this remarkable find is one of the largest rough diamonds ever discovered. The mine is located about 430 kilometers from the capital, Gaborone.
Lucara did not provide a valuation or quality assessment for the stone but confirmed it is one of the largest diamonds in history, second only to the famous 3,016.75-carat Cullinan Diamond discovered in South Africa in 1905.
Lucara’s president and CEO, William Lamb, expressed excitement over the discovery, crediting the company’s advanced Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray technology for detecting the gem.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana was scheduled to view the extraordinary diamond later on the day of the announcement.
Botswana, a global leader in diamond production, heavily relies on diamonds as a major income source.
Prior to this discovery, the largest diamond found in the country was the 1,758-carat Sewelo, also mined by Lucara in 2019.
