140 females killed by partners every 24hrs – UN Report

The UN Women and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have released their Gender-Based Violence report.

The report reveals that intimate partners or family members killed 140 women and girls daily in 2023, marking a slight increase from 2022. This translates to one woman being killed every 10 minutes.

The report emphasizes that the home is the most dangerous place for women and girls.

In 2023, 51,100 women and girls lost their lives, compared to 48,800 in 2022.

Africa faced the highest incidence, with approximately 21,700 victims, making it the region with the highest frequency of such violence. The Americas and Oceania also reported high rates, while Asia and Europe had significantly lower rates.

The report highlights that almost 60% of all women who were intentionally killed in 2023 died at the hands of partners or family members. It also points out that 80% of all homicide victims in 2023 were men, but lethal violence within the family takes a much higher toll on women than men.

The report calls for urgent preventive measures and stresses that these killings are preventable through timely and effective interventions. It also emphasizes the need for systematic data collection to inform policy, track progress, and ensure governments remain accountable for their commitments to gender equality.
