Student Loan: Obasanjo urges Tinubu to include private university students among beneficiaries

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu & Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked President Bola Tinubu to include students from private universities in the Student Loan Scheme.

Nonetheless, Obasanjo expressed skepticism on the scheme’s management without documenting unethical actions.

The former president spoke during the inauguration of the Asiwaju Onafowokan, Coleman Wires and Cables building at Bells University’s College of Postgraduate Studies in Ota, Ogun State.

“The Vice-Chancellor has spoken about the need to include students in private universities as beneficiaries of the Student Loan Scheme. I urge the government to listen to that and take heed to include them too. I doubt if the scheme will be run without corruption, that is another matter entirely,” he said.

Obasanjo, the owner of Bell University of Technology, believes that the loan plan is critical to the progress of society and the wellbeing of its citizens, and that excluding a set of people would be unproductive.

This comes at a time when Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), stated that students in private universities will not benefit from the loan plan.
