RSIEC goes ahead with Rivers LG polls

The local government election in Rivers State is continuing as planned, despite opposition from key stakeholders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to halt the process.

Both sensitive and non-sensitive election materials have been delivered to Registration and Accreditation Centers (RACs) in several areas, including Government Technical College in Ahoada East.

On election day, the atmosphere across the state is relatively calm, with quiet roads. However, a notable absence of the Nigeria Police Force has been reported.

Governor Fubara, addressing the situation, reiterated his decision to proceed with the election, despite the Rivers State Police Command’s withdrawal from overseeing it. He accused Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of attempting to disrupt the election in favor of a “politician based in Abuja.”

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) also confirmed that the election would proceed as scheduled and urged residents to cast their votes in line with the Electoral Act.
