The House of Representatives has rejected the national honor conferred on Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, citing discrimination by President Bola Tinubu.
The President had awarded Senate President Godswill Akpabio a higher honor, sparking discontent within the House.
On Tuesday, Tinubu announced the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) for Akpabio and Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, while Abbas and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau received the lower Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).
In response, on Wednesday, Philip Agbese presented a motion of urgent public importance, which was signed by all 360 House members. The House argued that Representatives are not inferior to Senators and demanded equal treatment for both legislative leaders.
The motion also called for the abolition of the terms “upper chamber” and “lower chamber,” stating that both chambers should be considered equal.
