Edo Guber: PDP, APC in tight race as INEC begins collation in few hours

Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, and Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are locked in a fierce contest in the ongoing Edo State governorship election.

As of now, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded 97% of the results from the 4,519 polling units to its IReV portal.

According to these results, Asue Ighodalo of the PDP is leading in the Edo South Senatorial District, while his APC counterpart, Senator Monday Okpebholo, holds the advantage in the Edo North Senatorial District. Although the Labour Party (LP) was initially seen as a strong contender, the results show that the party is trailing in a distant third place.

Several political heavyweights, including Governor Godwin Obaseki, PDP candidate Ighodalo, PDP deputy governorship candidate Osarodion Ogie, and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, have won their respective polling units.

However, LP candidate Olumide Akpata lost his unit to the PDP.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued by Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo, INEC announced that collation of results will begin at 10 AM on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at INEC’s head office in Benin, the state capital.

This development is expected to ease the growing tension surrounding the delayed formal announcement of results.

INEC data shows that 98.23% of polling unit results have been uploaded to its IReV portal as of the time of filing this report.
