Femi Adesina, former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has praised Buhari as a friend of the poor in a heartfelt birthday tribute.
Adesina’s tribute, marking Buhari’s 82nd birthday, highlighted the former president’s commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
Adesina emphasized that Buhari’s decision not to remove the petrol subsidy during his tenure was driven by his concern for the poor and underprivileged.
He noted that despite the financial burden of the subsidy, Buhari prioritized the needs of ordinary Nigerians, earning him the moniker “Ore Mekunu,” a Yoruba phrase meaning “friend of the poor.”
Reflecting on Buhari’s actions during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Adesina recalled how the former president instructed the then-Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, to ensure timely payment of workers’ salaries and pensions to alleviate their financial difficulties.
Adesina also mentioned that Buhari’s popularity among the masses helped him secure significant electoral victories in 2015 and 2019.
Adesina concluded his tribute by acknowledging Buhari’s enduring appeal, even in retirement, as people continue to flock to his residence to catch a glimpse of him. He saluted Buhari as a true friend of the poor who remains a magnet for the people.
