Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the conversion of ad-hoc staff in the state’s 33 local government councils to permanent positions.
The announcement came during the commissioning of the newly-constructed Local Government House and Staff Training School in Ibadan on Wednesday.
Makinde explained that this decision was made to address workforce gaps at the local government level and emphasized that due process for the conversion must be completed within four weeks.
He also reassured that his administration remains committed to supporting local government authorities to better serve citizens and align with his broader vision for the state.
In addition, the governor highlighted that the new complex will enhance the working environment for local government staff, improving their productivity. He also mentioned plans to renovate state secretariat facilities before the end of his administration in 2027.
Makinde touched on the payment of leave bonuses for primary school teachers, which had been neglected since 2017. His government has since cleared the backlog from 2017 to 2023 and has made significant payments towards pensions and gratuities, disbursing over ₦18 billion in pensions and ₦15 billion in gratuities to retirees.
