The Labour Party (LP) has removed its national chairman, Comrade Julius Abure, along with other members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), due to the expiration of their tenure.
In response, the party has established a 29-member caretaker committee to fill the leadership gap, led by former finance minister Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as chairman and Hon. Darlington Nwokocha as secretary.
This decision was made during a NEC and stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, hosted by Abia State governor Alex Otti, the party’s only governor.
The meeting was chaired by Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and attended by several prominent party members, including lawmakers. However, Abure and his allies were absent.
The stakeholders emphasized that Abure’s tenure ended in June, and thus, he no longer held legitimacy as the national chairman.
They called for the caretaker committee to oversee the party’s congresses at all levels within three months to elect new leaders.
The committee was instructed to work toward resolving the internal issues affecting the party and positioning it to attract new members.
Peter Obi reiterated his commitment to due process and expressed that the meeting was not meant to isolate any party members, stressing unity going forward.
