Former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has expressed regret over the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Speaking at the launch of his autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” in Abuja on Thursday, February 20, 2025, Babangida admitted that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola won the election.
Babangida described the annulment as the most challenging aspect of his life and took full responsibility for the decision.
“I regret June 12. I accept full responsibility for the decisions taken and June 12 happened under my watch. Mistakes, missteps happened in quick successions,” he said.
“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements.”
He also expressed gratitude to former President Muhammadu Buhari for acknowledging Abiola’s victory and honoring him with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) title.
