House of Reps proposes creation of 31 new states [LIST]

Nigeria’s House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has proposed the creation of 31 new states across the country.

This was disclosed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu during a plenary session on Thursday, February 6, 2025. The proposals span all six geopolitical zones: North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South, and South West.

The proposed states are as follows:

North Central:

  1. Okun (Kogi)
  2. Okura (Kogi)
  3. Confluence (Kogi)
  4. Benue Ala (Benue)
  5. Apa (Benue)

North East:

  1. Amana (Adamawa)
  2. Katagum (Bauchi)
  3. Savannah (Borno)
  4. Muri (Taraba)

North West:

  1. New Kaduna State (Kaduna)
  2. Gujarat States (Kaduna)
  3. Tiga (Kano)
  4. Ari (Kano)
  5. Kainji (Kebbi)

South East:

  1. Etiti (Enugu)
  2. Orashi (Enugu)
  3. Adada (Enugu)
  4. Orlu (Imo)
  5. Aba (Abia)

South South:

  1. Ogoja (Cross River)
  2. Warri (Delta)
  3. Ori (Rivers)
  4. Obolo (Rivers)

South West:

  1. Torumbe (Ondo)
  2. Ibadan (Oyo)
  3. Lagoon (Lagos)
  4. Ogun (Ogun)
  5. Ijebu (Ogun)
  6. Oke Ogun (Oyo)
  7. Ijesha (Oyo/Ogun/Osun)

These proposals are part of the ongoing constitutional review process, and they must meet specific conditions outlined in Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution before they can be approved.
