The Nigerian House of Representatives has made significant progress on the Diaspora Voting Bill, which aims to amend the 2022 Electoral Act to allow Nigerians living abroad to participate in national elections.
The bill, co-sponsored by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Representative Sodeeq Abdullahi, passed its second reading on Wednesday.
The bill has now been referred to the Constitution Amendment Committee for further legislative action. This development marks a crucial step towards including the voices of millions of Nigerians in the diaspora in the electoral process.
Proponents of the bill argue that Nigerians abroad contribute significantly to the country’s economy through remittances and should have the right to vote.
They emphasize that this inclusion would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their location, can participate in choosing their leaders.
