A bill aiming to allow Nigeria to return to its previous national anthem has passed the second reading in the Senate.
The bill, put forward by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has received strong backing from the lawmakers.
It’s now under review by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, with a report expected in two weeks.
The lawmakers, who appeared unanimous in support of the bill, opined that it would promote better symbol for unity, peace and prosperity, compared to the current one.
Following a private session on the bill, the legislators stated that the current national anthem was imposed by the military regime and should be replaced. They believe that doing so would better reflect the nation’s democratic principles, integrity, and encourage a stronger commitment to nation-building.
In a similar development, the House of Representatives has passed the bill to revert to the old national anthem.
