The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated an investigation into a viral video showing a woman, Favour Igiebor, destroying a Nigerian passport, allegedly belonging to her husband, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The NIS has also invited Igiebor for questioning regarding the incident.
The NIS spokesman, Kenneth Udo, stated that the woman’s actions could potentially violate Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), which includes penalties under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
The NIS emphasized its commitment to enforcing the provisions of the Act to safeguard national security and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s legal instruments.
In response to the incident, Igiebor explained in a subsequent video that her actions were driven by personal and family challenges.
She expressed that she was not acting irrationally but was pushed to the extreme by difficulties in her marriage.
She also clarified that she waited until they returned to Nigeria to take this action, instead of doing so in Europe, to minimize the stress on her husband. Igiebor apologized to the NIS for her behavior.
