Two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, were arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly selling newborn twin girls.
Officers from the Ojodu Division apprehended them on September 9, 2024, at Berger bus stop after receiving a tip-off from concerned citizens.
Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin reported that the suspects had the approximately six-day-old infants with them. They had traveled from Abia State, intending to deliver the babies to a nurse in Lagos, as the babies’ mother planned to contact her upon their arrival.
During questioning, the suspects admitted to the crime, claiming they were paid ₦150,000 for transporting the infants. They stated that the mother sold the babies due to her inability to provide proper care.
The case has been transferred to the command’s gender unit, and the newborns are now in a motherless baby home for proper care and medical evaluation.
The suspects were arraigned on September 19, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend others involved in the case.
