Religious Centres ordered to remove loudspeakers by Enugu Gov’t

The Enugu State Government has issued a directive requiring all churches and mosques in the state to remove outdoor loudspeakers and install soundproofing measures within the next 90 days.

This decision was announced on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting involving Christian and Muslim leaders, government officials, and media practitioners.

The meeting, organized by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, was part of the state’s efforts to implement the Enugu State Anti-Noise Pollution Policy.

Uche Anya, the Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, made the announcement and emphasized the urgent need to address noise pollution in the state.

He highlighted that noise pollution has become a significant issue, with his office receiving over 1,000 complaints from residents across various parts of Enugu, including Independence Layout, GRA, Trans-Ekulu, Agbani Road, Abakpa Nike, and Ugwuaji.

Anya explained that the complaints have come from people who are disturbed by noise from religious centers and other establishments. He stressed that the state government is committed to creating a more peaceful environment for residents and urged religious leaders to comply with the new regulations by soundproofing their worship centers.

This directive follows a previous order from the government in 2023, which required nightclubs, beer parlors, and other entertainment venues to reduce noise pollution, particularly in residential areas.

The latest move extends these efforts to religious institutions as part of the broader urban renewal policy in Enugu State.
