In a tragic incident on Saturday, a petrol tanker explosion along Dikko-Maje Road in the Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State claimed the lives of over 50 people.
Many others sustained injuries while attempting to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker.
The explosion occurred around 9 am when the tanker, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit, crashed and its contents came into contact with a generator during an attempted transfer, triggering the blast.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), and other agencies working tirelessly to assist the injured and recover the bodies of the deceased.
The state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, expressed shock and sympathy for the victims’ families, urging residents to prioritize safety and cooperate with emergency responders.
