Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid tribute to the late Jimmy Carter, describing him as a man of humility who made significant contributions to Africa during his time in office.
Carter, who passed away, on Sunday, at the age of 100, served as President of the United States from 1977 the to 1981.
Obasanjo recalled Carter’s leadership and its lasting impact, particularly in supporting the fight against colonialism and apartheid in Southern Africa.
Obasanjo highlighted Carter’s diplomacy and patience, noting that despite the challenges he faced, such as the American embassy occupation in Iran, Carter’s achievements, including the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, were remarkable.
He emphasized Carter’s humility and commitment to justice, stating, “He was a man close to God and God was close to him”.
Reflecting on Carter’s legacy, Obasanjo urged current and former leaders to continue serving their countries and the world even after leaving office. He stressed that true leadership extends beyond the corridors of power and involves using experiences and connections gained in office to advance humanity.
Obasanjo called on leaders to learn from Carter’s example of wielding power responsibly and understanding the importance of diplomacy and humility.
Obasanjo also mentioned Carter’s visit to Nigeria in 1978, which further solidified Carter’s commitment to Africa’s struggles for independence and justice.
He praised Carter’s lifelong dedication to humanitarian causes and his ability to remain active in public service until he no longer had the strength.
