The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that the crescent moon of Shawwal was not sighted in Nigeria on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
As a result, Ramadan fasting will continue on Sunday, March 30, 2025, with Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations expected to follow on Monday, March 31, 2025.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia announced the sighting of the Shawwal crescent, signalling the end of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan.
Key Details:
- Moon Sighting Guidelines: The NSCIA emphasized that moon sighting must adhere to Islamic guidelines and verification standards. Despite scientific predictions of the moon’s conjunction earlier in the day, physical observation remains the determining factor.
- Official Announcement: The Sultanate Council confirmed that no credible reports of moon sightings were received from across the country, prompting the continuation of fasting.
- Eid-ul-Fitr Date: If the crescent moon is sighted on Sunday evening, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Monday. Otherwise, it will automatically fall on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
