The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced plans to prosecute individuals and organizations involved in the unauthorized printing of National Identification Number (NIN) cards.
This move comes as the commission prepares to launch its official General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC).
The Commission, which issued the warning in a statement released on Monday and signed by its Head, Corporate Communications Unit, Kayode Adegoke, reiterated that the NIN slip is the only legal document authorized as a means of identification.
Key Details:
- Illegal Activity: NIMC has observed that some cyber cafés, individuals, and organizations are printing fake NIN cards and charging exorbitant fees. These actions violate the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007.
- Legal Document: The commission reiterated that the NIN slip remains the only legally recognized document for identification until the GMPC is officially launched.
- Security Measures: Security agencies have been directed to apprehend and prosecute offenders. NIMC emphasized that anyone caught engaging in this illegal activity will face the full force of the law.
- GMPC Launch: The upcoming GMPC will serve as both an identification document and a payment card, featuring biometric authentication and offline/online capabilities. However, the card will not be free, as the government aims to avoid past issues with uncollected free cards.
This crackdown underscores NIMC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s national identification system.
