The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has been appointed co-chair of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) advisory body on submarine cable resilience.
This body will tackle the growing concerns regarding the vulnerability of global submarine cables, which are responsible for carrying more than 99% of international data, crucial to global communication and economic activities.
Tijani, who shared the news via his X account, emphasized that the advisory group will serve as a platform for international collaboration, bringing together governments, regulators, and industry leaders to enhance the protection, safety, and redundancy of submarine cables. He will co-chair alongside Prof. Sandra Maximiano, Chair of ANACOM’s Board of Directors, with the group’s two-year term starting on November 1, 2024.
Tijani highlighted that Nigeria has been particularly focused on this area due to recent challenges with submarine cable cuts, emphasizing the importance of securing global digital infrastructure. ITU reaffirmed that the advisory panel will facilitate dialogue among key stakeholders, aiming to improve the resilience of submarine cable systems, which are increasingly at risk from natural disasters and accidental damage.
The nomination process for advisory body members is currently open until October 15, 2024 via the ITU’s official nomination form.
