Nigerians have raised ₦1.8 million for Ogwu Chijioke, a protester whose son dreams of becoming a programmer.
Chijioke was among the hundreds of protesters in Lagos State participating in the nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstrations over harsh economic conditions.
During an interview with Channels Television at the Lekki Toll Gate, Chijioke shared his struggles in supporting his son’s programming ambitions.
“My son, at 13, is a programmer but I can’t even buy data for him to learn more or pay for the tuition fees, which run into millions of naira,” he said, holding his bicycle.
“I would rather die on the streets than at home. I can’t watch my son’s future go to waste. I may not have a future in Nigeria, but my son’s future will not be wasted.”
His story quickly went viral.
Social media influencer Morris Monye shared the video, captioning it, “You can feel the passion in his soul. He’s lost hope for himself but not for his son. This is why he is protesting.”
Monye later announced, “I’ve gotten his details. N1.8 million is needed to make his dreams come true.”
Within 24 hours, the funds were raised. “N1.8 million raised. Money complete. This crowdfunding is now over,” he confirmed, thanking everyone for their generosity.
