Nigeria to deepen military cooperation in bilateral ties with the US

General Christopher Gwabin Musa OFR, Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff

According to Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defense, the Federal Government of Nigeria will keep bolstering its bilateral military cooperation connections with the United States.

He welcomed delegations of US Air Force War College students on a foreign study tour of friendly nations to Ship House in Abuja.

He characterized Nigeria’s foreign policy as afrocentric and stated that the country has been instrumental in supplying peacekeeping forces to numerous African nations, including Mali, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Gambia, Sudan, and Chad.

Since 1960, when diplomatic relations were established, Nigeria and the United States of America have enjoyed a mutually beneficial bilateral relationship.

He went on to say that the 1999 civilian president’s inauguration strengthened ties between the two nations and enhanced collaboration on international policy objectives like regional peacekeeping.

The Permanent Secretary stated that both nations will benefit from the visit of the US Air War College participants in strengthening military cooperation as a working tool for future cooperation.

The delegation’s leader, Col. Gunter John, had earlier thanked the Permanent Secretary for giving them an audience and that they would be able to learn from Nigeria’s defense architecture and defense management strategy.

The Ministry’s presentation on the current bilateral military cooperation between the two nations was the meeting’s high point.
