The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye has declared her support for the mass wedding of the 100 orphans initiated by the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji.
Kennedy-Ohanenye, on Thursday, announced scholarships and gave various gift items to 100 orphaned girls in Niger State, ahead of their mass wedding Friday.
The minister had opposed the mass wedding of the young girls, saying it was a violation of the Child Rights Act.
Before the mass wedding, the minister, represented by her Special Assistant on Private Sector, Adaji Usman, visited Niger to declare scholarships for the girls.
They also distributed items like wrappers and food at the palace of the Emir of Kontagora, Mohammed Muazu.
The minister, through Usman, provided 10 Point of Sale machines, 100 wrappers, and 350 bags of 10kg rice. She also announced university-level scholarships for any of the girls interested in pursuing education.
Kennedy-Ohanenye also instructed that bank accounts be created for all 100 prospective brides. They will receive a stipend for the next six months to help them adjust to their new homes with their husbands.
